The Story Behind “Looking Through the Rain”

When you hear “Looking Through the Rain” what do you think of? A young girl sitting on a park bench, night fallen, downpour….. An old man with nothing left but an old picture, thinking back on what used to be… Soaked by the thick rain…. Tell me, have you ever been here?

When I wrote “Looking Through the Rain” it really happened all at once. It started out just as an idea, the part you first heard was all I had begun to write. I had toyed with the idea a bit, trying this, trying that… But mostly I couldn’t get it out of my head.

One night I was out in the park, it was already dark out. I was under a patio, on a bench…. Rain pouring down… There was a tree, all in sillouette to my left… A path, curving out of view, was illuminated by the soft orange glow of the lamp above… The pathway was covered in water… The downpour was so heavy, and the sky was black….

When I looked to see this, I saw it a different way. It wasn’t about looking at the rain anymore… I was looking through it, and I could hear the song as clear as day. I didn’t just see my song, I also saw the others on the album. It was all clear on this seemingly dreadful night… I wrote the poem right away, and put down the first recording of it not long after.

So now, why don’t you listen to the song, and read the poem I wrote about that very same night. You will see how I turned this picture into sound.

Now the poem…………..

Looking through the rain

With forbidden eyes

Seeing the unknown

Through the swaths of water falling

Down… down… down…

I see the pathway

It’s old and sacred

I’m not sure where it leads

But I’d like to find out…

There’s water almost covering it

The grass on either side is submerged

Water of the past…..

It has seen the makings of history

The tree is in shadow

I cannot see its details

The bark, cut and blemishes

Are all hidden

Maybe for a good reason…..

The warmth of her sitting next to me…

I can feel the water on her clothes

Seeping through mine

Onto my skin

It’s alright though… I am content

She looks into my eyes with the

Night sky above us

Stars still untouched

Eons of time has passed before their eyes

The black, ominous clouds still

Looming above our young heads

Sending down its rain

But with it your memories travel too…

Down… down… down to the ground…

Till you decide to pick them back up again

And relive the time long passed

Away…..

Wind Trios…not really wind

Yes me and dad had much fun with this, as with anything musical… Writing music for multiple instruments is a comfortable change from piano solo music. Even if you aren’t a classical music buff, take a listen and see if you like….. ( hint to like our facbook pages ) 🙂

My son and I began writing trios for woodwinds recently. The problem was neither of us played the three instruments oboe, flute and bassoon. So…electronic methods were conveyed to us. We wrote them in Sibelius; a notation program. It was fun to use the skills I learned in music school all those years before. The one I wish to share with you today is called ” Medieval fair.” It has roots in early Bach and being in the key of A minor…sounds a bit like an old fair in the medieval period to me. Good News!

Bonjour tout le monde! I hope you are all doing well. Recently, I have been busy with composing. Both piano solo scores and some fun digital pieces! Now I just have to decide on the perfect names! I will be posting the digital tracks soon on SoundCloud for free listening if you would like to check it out.

Today we just got the last things we needed to put our latest piano solo albums out! Mine, “Looking Through the Rain” and my father’s “Laments, Dreams, and Visions” will be out for sale very soon! Hopefully by this time next week they’ll be on the net. If you want to listen to it before it comes out, that can also be found on SoundCloud.

I am going to put out another Composer’s Life paper later this week. This time it is going to be Bela Bartok, ever heard of him? He was a Hungarian composer, read the short write-up on him to find out more cool and interesting facts! Here’s a link to some Romanian Folk Dances by him, hope you enjoy!

If you didn’t read the last Composer’s Life paper about Domenico Scarlatti, you can find it HERE

And of course, follow on Twitter. Friend on Facebook. Fall on Tumblr. Subscribe to WordPress, ahh this is too confusing!

A la prossima !

A blast from the past!

Check out this cool post from my father! I remember listening to “The Borg Ship” as a young child !

Publication1In the mid nineties I had a go at electronic music. Everyone else was so why not me? I hooked my keyboard up to my new computer software and just went. I never published any of these pieces as my solo piano career was just taking off. There were several pieces that I submitted to Hollywood for movie themes and such. Today’s offering is called ” The Borg Ship”. I thought that maybe Star Trek would want it. I guess not because I never heard back…LOL. But they were fun to do and really was my first time playing with effects and such. It is supposed to describe the inside of the ship the enemy of the federation lived in. If you are not a trekkie like me, it will just be a cool song. But if you know the Borg, you can hear them clanging about in there. I…

Coffee and Scarlatti

Today I decided that some coffee might be helpful to my work. Actually I didn’t think this I already knew it. At least it made a good excuse to grab some JOE!

As I was sipping my coffee ( or should I say chugging? )  I was doing my research on the composer Domenico Scarlatti. I already knew a bit about him from when I had studied his music, but I found out a bunch of other cool info about this baroque composer! ( I’ll post my report on him when I finish! )

I’ve always loved the harpsichord, you know, that instrument that was the pre-piano ? Bach played it and wrote some of his greatest compositions on this instrument! Scarlatti used the harpsichord as well, matter of fact he was born the same year as Bach! I have always wanted one, supposedly you can make them yourself! (if you’re willing to pay the big bucks) Maybe in the future I’ll be able to get my piano-playing fingers on one!

That’s it for today, I want to be more frequent posting on the site. If you want more, follow the blog and tell your friends about it!

Au revoir!
